Types of volleyball sets and when to use them
by: C. Wohlfeil

The Setter is a central player on a volleyball team, often considered the team leader because of their involvement in nearly every play. An effective Setter is knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of different types of sets and the circumstances under which each should be used.

There are 5 basic types of sets:
  1. The Side Set is used to set balls passed close to the net. By using the side set, the Setter can avoid touching the net with their elbow or body (referred to as netting). The Side Set can also be used when the Setter is away from the net to set the ball to the right front attacker.
  2. The Jump Set is used when the Setter is moving away from the net to chase down a pass.
  3. The One-Hand Set is used when a pass is too tight to reach with a two-handed set.
  4. The Forearm Set is used when the ball is too low to hand set. This set is similar to the "bump" or forearm pass.
  5. The First-Tempo Set is used when the attacker (the person in the front line receiving the set) is in the air just before the set.

The more skill the Setter has in choosing and executing the appropriate set for the play, the more likely the ball will remain in play. The ability to use a variety of sets requires the Setter to be physical and mentally strong and agile.
