The Top Volleyball Skill Drills
by: S. Hendricks
Being a successful volleyball player involves the development of many different skills. Some drills are based on developing offensive attacks while others are designed to teach players to be better defensively. There are even drills that are designed to help your team work together and communicate more effectively and others which focus on basic volleyball skills. The best volleyball practices will incorporate drills addressing all of these issues while at the same time working on the strength and fitness of the athletes. In order to ensure your practices are more effective, check out these top three volleyball skill drills designed to help improve your athletes in all of the above areas:
1) Wall-Hitting:
This is one of the most basic skill drills in volleyball, but you simply can't beat it. Make each of your athletes grab a volleyball and go to the wall of the gym or if you're outside to the outside of the closest building (not someone's house!). Ask each player to pick a spot on the wall or if you can, grab a ladder and tape tiny circles on the wall at a decent height. Have each athlete hit the volleyball onto that spot repeatedly. Be sure that the proper form is being used each time. This will also help them with the endurance of those arm, back, and abdominal muscles that are needed for proper technique. When playing any sport you want to instill good habits so that those skills are used correctly without even thinking about it. It is really important to master a drill like this before moving on to more difficult ones. If you coach a team that is starting to get sloppy and fall apart, then take a step back from more complex drills and get back to basics with wall-hitting.
2) Talking Drill:
This drill helps the communication and, therefore, defense of a team while also improving the fitness of your team if they have difficulty with the communication aspect. Set up your team on one side of the net while you stand on the other side with a basket of volleyballs. Serve the volleyballs to them and have them play it out before they send it back. Each time you serve the ball crosses the net they have to call something out to help communicate. They must also call something out after one of them hits the ball to one of his/her teammates on their side of the net. If nothing is said during either of these times, then the whole team (even though who are sitting out this turn) must run sprints/a lap/ do push-ups, do some sort of strength or endurance activity. You may want to switch it up every once in a while during the drill to ensure that they are getting a good overall workout.
3) Strictly Offense Drill:
Often during a practice scrimmage, who is serving switches back and forth so often that you may not have the time to work on offensive skills over and over again with a specific group. In order to remedy that you need to set up a scrimmage where one side always serves and the other side always receives. (This will also help with defense though you will focus your constructive comments on the offensive skills being used). Play half the game this way and then switch. When someone messes up a serve, have them do it again. You can also make up rules about how different people need to be involved with each rally or however you want to control the aspects of it are up to you. This drill will provide your player’s time to try their skills again, will improve teamwork for both your offense and defense, and will hopefully give you a chance to really dissect your offense and make changes for the better.
If you focus your drills on hitting one or more of the skills necessary to developing good volleyball players, then you're hitting the mark. Continue to do drills with a good combination and switch it up from practice to practice. Hopefully you'll see improvements in your team and individual athletes after only a few practices. .
