The Dig: Tips for keeping the volleyball in play
by: T. Brown

The dig is not a pass, or a hit, or any move intended to start a play. The dig is a mere defensive move, intended solely to prevent the ball from hitting the ground. With this being said, the dig has no intention of direction to it.

As a pass, the passer has strong intentions of placement for his or her ball. This is a common mistake with a dig. The number one rule while digging, is think up. Straight up. If you are digging a ball that is coming at you a hundred miles an hour from a spike, or if you are diving out of bounds, think straight up. All you want to do is get the ball high enough into the air so one of your teammates has enough time to get under it, and make an effective play on it.

If you try to place your digs… good luck. I don't think many of us are pro's who can place just about anything that comes to them, so don't try it. Nine times out of ten, if you try to place a ball that you don't have control on, it is going to go the complete opposite way as you intended. I have seen it happen countless times in varsity games. So if you just think logically, allow someone on your team to pass this wild ball by containing it, and giving your teammate enough time to get under it.

If you think straight up, you are golden. Remember the reason you're digging the ball is because you don't have control of it and you are trying to keep it in play. So don't try to do more than you can handle. Contain this loose ball, and allow other teammates to make a play on it.
