Match Coaching and Developmental Coaching in Volleyball
by: T. Brown

As a coach you need to inspire your players, especially in the game of volleyball. If you can teach each and every one of your players to play with heart and give it their all 100% of the time, then you are doing the best you can as a coach.

In volleyball, skill can only take you so far. Plain and simple. You can only learn the proper technique of spike, or a dig one time. You can only understand the offensive and defensive formations and how they work. But being out there, and putting it all together, and diving for balls, or being a step quicker on your block is what will put you above the other team.

So as a coach, again, inspire. Show your players what hard work is and then make them want to achieve the best every time they step foot on the court. Make your defense live for diving for loose balls, and make your offensive breathe kills. During games, always have a positive attitude. Cheer on your players as they bust their tales for each point. Show them that you recognize their hard work, but at the same time, let it be known that this hard work is expected.

In practice, depending on your age group you are coaching, make everything fun. If you can teach the techniques and at the same time put your players through a good workout and everyone is still having a good time, then you're doing a great job. Create a competitive atmosphere during practice also. Set up scenarios where the losing team runs, or something of that nature. Spark a fire in your players that will carry over to games, and motivate your team.

Be a leader. Set an example for your team. If you are trying to inspire your players, then be inspired yourself. Show your love for the game and transfer it over to them, during games and practice.
