• When did you start playing volleyball?
My freshmen of high school
• Did you have someone (an athlete) you looked up to when you were younger?
I looked up to my cousin Kelly when I was younger. She played both basketball and softball and I wanted to be just like her.
• What is some advice that has stuck with you over the years?
I’ve learned that going the extra mile puts you miles ahead of your competition.
• Where did you attend college? Did you play volleyball? Were you on scholarship?
I attended
Long Beach State
. I played volleyball from 1989-1992 on an athletic scholarship.
• You won a National Championship in 1993. What is a favorite memory from that season?
We actually won the first National Championship in 1989. It was the first title for Women’s Volleyball at Long Beach State since becoming a Division 1. Too many favorite memories… Probably beating Nebraska in the title match.

• You are a member of the Long Beach State Hall of Fame. That is a pretty impressive feat for any volleyball player. How was that experience?
It was an honor and a privilege to get selected to the Hall of Fame for playing a sport that I absolutely love!
• You played with other Long Beach All American’s/Legends,
Tara Cross-Battle
,
Danielle Scott-Arruda
, and Antoinette White. How has the game changed since then?
Definitely a noticeable difference are the rules of the game have changed since I played i.e net serve, libero, scoring system etc. Another thing it seems like everyone is so tall. Back when I played, if you had two players that were 6’3”, you were a tall team. Nowadays, it seems like everyone has 6’3” players and taller on their roster. No one is smaller then 6’0! ☺
• Did you have another job before you entered the coaching world?
I was a Special Education teacher for 5 years prior to coaching.
• Why did you enter the coaching profession?
I entered the coaching profession because I still wanted to be involved with the sport that I loved so much that it seemed like a natural transition.
• Did you have a coaching mentor? If yes, who?
I have been so fortunate to have several coaches who have been my mentors…
Brian Gimmillaro
,
Debbie Green
and
John Speraw
• What are some of your core values for your team?
We stress family, responsibility, accountability and integrity.
• What are some of your favorite drills for practice? Individual drills? Team Drills?
Favorite drills for practice….. water break ☺ just kidding… so many drills… I do like wash drills, competitive drills, anything that is gamelike situations.
• The coaching profession is a hard profession to have longevity in. What is your advice on longevity?
Can’t worry too much about longevity. Just need to work hard and constantly strive to better yourself as a coach, teacher and motivator.
• As a spectator of the game, do you have any changes to the indoor game you would recommend?
Mike the coaches during timeouts and in between games to see what they say and what kind of game adjustments they would make so that spectators could hear…
• What are your thoughts on the beach game? The Beach Collegiate Championships?
I think its another great opportunity for women to pursue.
• What advise would you give college volleyball players looking to get into the coaching world?
I would recommend that they work for a variety of coaches, learn as much as you can from each and keep a journal and write down things, ideas, drills etc..that you would like to do or not do so when the time comes to be a head coach you will have this journal to refer back to..
• What is some advice you can provide high school players looking to continue their volleyball career in college?
Always work hard b/c you never know who might be watching. College coaches are always looking at the intangibles..
• As a college coach/recruiter, do you prefer emails or letters? VHS/DVD, or Online videos? Phone calls?
All of the above. Every type of communication mentioned above is important in getting to know the prospect better as a volleyball player and as a person!
