Techniques for Contacting the Ball in Volleyball
by: J. Frizzell

Contrary to popular opinion hitting a volleyball is not all strength and force. Well, I mean, you can play that way, but in the end you will be very sore, not to mention you will probably lose. Volleyball is truly a game of agility. If you cannot learn to hit the ball in the proper way, you will never be a decent competitor. Here are a few pointers in regards to making the proper kind of contact in the game of volleyball:
  1. Speed plus strength is equal to power. (To attain this balance, you must be almost zen-like in your approach. Just remember that strength is merely mass alone, but when aided by copious amounts of speed - both on your feet and on the ball - you will exert true power on the courts)

  2. Finesse. (This is so underestimated. Sometimes a volleyball game can look like a ballet, when it is played well. Make sure that what you do with the ball, while it is in your possession, is the most appropriate thing that can be done. Whether you make a set or spike it back or simple lay it over. The key is understanding how to communicate the sport through your connection with the ball.

  3. Technique. (If you do not have an experienced player around to teach you the basics of technique, you can always get a book like "Volleyball for Dummies" and work on it yourself. There are many moves - both offensively and defensively - that once learned, will improve your volleyball arsenal 10 fold. Don't forget about education.)

  4. Basically, just don't go out there randomly smacking the ball around. Not only will you upset the serious players around you, but ultimately, you will only disappoint yourself.
